Welcome to the ExpatMauritius.com Blog

There are many facets of expatriate life that come as a total surprise. It is easy for outsiders to get the wrong idea about expatriate life: a perception that combines romanticism and leisure, adventure and pleasure, a better life, a hope, a future. It is seen as a privileged lifestyle and envied by those who stay behind. These qualities may, in some way or another, be present in the expatriate lifestyle, but with them also come the sacrifices, discipline, energy, focus, determination, self-discipline and connectedness that enable you to keep yourself together. Hi, this is such a helpful site, we are wanting to emigrate and I wanted to know if my high school going kids have to learn french as a second language they will be in grade 10 and 11? They would go to an english school. Is it compulsary at all the english schools to learn french? Also what happens to 18year olds when they finish school, apparently they do not get residency automatically?

Thanks for this website...still reading through it, but have a question with regards to homeschooling in Mauritius. We are South African, though we are making plans to immigrate to Mauritius, so am wanting to find information with regards to citizens homeschooling in Mauritius. I have posted this question to a few forums, so I am hoping someone may be able to steer me in the right direction to find out the legalities of homeschooling in Mauritius. Thanks again for such a valuable source of information!

Homeschooling is not a general concept in Mauritius and phone calls to the ministries did not bring me closer to a satisfying answer - from a legal perceptive.

Legally Mauritians must attend school until the age of 16.
Morningstar is a school (primary – secondary) which teach the ACE curriculum in a school setup.
There are some expats whom home school their children, but they and few and far in-between.

The question from the Ministry of Education is: “how old are your children?”

The private schools in general provides a very good education.

As a past teacher from Le Bocage, I may be ale to clarify a few things for you if you are interested in sending your high school aged children(11-18 year olds) there.

Le Bocage is an English-medium Iinternational school which offers English and French as a First language (yearly cohort streamed into 3 groups) but also English and French as a foreign language. It is compulsory to have both languages and 1 of the 2 languages has to be a first language.

As in all Secondary Schools, it is up to the kids to make what they want of it!Possibilities are plentiful to carry out high level studies there with mostly well-qualified staff with the right approach and interest in their students.

When mauritian students graduate at 18/19 yrs they generally go on to further studies (in Mauritius/abroad). As children of expats, they are not entitled to stay unless on holiday (3 month periods at a time) so this can be used if they have work placements abroad or travel abroad in between stays. You may like to look into the possibility of them staying on if studying at a Mauritius Instuitute such as DCDM.

Good luck to all! Mauritius now definitely has to offer you all that you need for mainstreamed school-aged kids!

Hi there we currently live in Canada and homeschool our son. We are looking at the possibility of living in Mauritius for a few years, maybe longer, and are really interested in the legalities of homeschooling while there and if there are other homes?
Thanks Nikki
