Welcome to the ExpatMauritius.com Blog

There are many facets of expatriate life that come as a total surprise. It is easy for outsiders to get the wrong idea about expatriate life: a perception that combines romanticism and leisure, adventure and pleasure, a better life, a hope, a future. It is seen as a privileged lifestyle and envied by those who stay behind. These qualities may, in some way or another, be present in the expatriate lifestyle, but with them also come the sacrifices, discipline, energy, focus, determination, self-discipline and connectedness that enable you to keep yourself together. Hello, I'm an English ex-pat moving to Mauritius from Dubai, in January. I will be working around Phoenix and I'd like advice on the best places to live. I'd like to be near the cost where other British and European ex-pats are likely to be living. I'd like to live somewhere that has a decent social scene with a good gym, restuarants and bars. I enjoy all sports and would like to live somewhere where people meet up to watch the big sporting events like internationsl rugby and football. My social life is very important to me. I'dl ike to live no further than 45 mins from work if possible.

Hi there,

I would definetly suggest that you look at the Tamarin area. They have a wonderful sporting facility called Riverland, which offer a fully equipped gym, various excercise classes, tennis courts, swimming pool and restaurant. This area also has lovely restaurants and bars, with big screens where locals and expats alike meet to watch sporting events and socialise. Depending on traffic, it is around 45 min away from Phoenix.
Hope this was helpful!

hi, my husband lives in mauritius and myself and my children are joining him soon. we are having great difficulty with finding decent accomodation - the estate agents have shown my husband complete wrecks of houses and wonder why he is not happy to rent any of them. is there any advice anyone could give to us - we have a very high budget for renting in the north so would love something beautiful? is this possible?

Yip, that sounds like estate agents in Mauritius :) no offense. Be selective - you will be able to find a beautiful place for a good price - especially if you have a high budget. Make use of independant estate agents - I always find them very helpful as they really do want to get to know you and your taste for a house. It is not so easy to get hold of them - most of the time through word of mouth or sometimes on the advertising boards in shopping centres. My advice - don't settle for second best. To answer your question - YES it is possible.

Hi,

please feel free to contact me, and I will try to assist you. I am Mauritian born, but lived in SA for 30 years, therefore am used to the standard back home! I have been an agent for almost 5 years now, and although I operate in the West region, I do have contacts in the North. My mail address is Property26.mu@gmail.com. Am looking forward to being of assistance.

Hi

My husband and I are moving to Mauritius in October, we are looking at areas to stay, he will be based in Cybercity. We want to be near the coast, it seems as if Flic 'n Flac is a good area. Can we get some suggestions?

Anonymous said...

Hi
My husband works in Cybercity and we live in Black River. The travel time is around 40 minutes if you go the back roads. Black River/Tamarin is very residential and a friendly place to live with 2 decent fairly large grocery stores, doctors, schools and a nice gym etc. Flic en Flac is probably more affordable rental wise and has a huge, beautiful public beach, loads of restaurants and bars and little shops. It is for me less appealing to live in Flic en Flac as it always feels quite touristy.
Hope this helps?

There is a big risk for those who decide leave their countries. Most of them have to return back home with nothing than a big experience and the memory of the pain caused by being alone in an strange land. If you have the money and know the best real estate agents to go abroad with at least your own home may the experience being easy, but if you go with nothing else than your hands and your will it can become a nightmare.
